Skater Bio: Growing up I was both weedy and clumsy. I hated exercise and avoided sport as much as possible. So, when I proudly announced to friends and family that I was planning to join a Roller Derby team, the laughter was understandable. I laughed too. We all laughed. Then I threw up in my mouth a little bit and signed up for the thing.
And who’s laughing now? Probably still them, but now the laughter is laced with respect. Probably.
I’m not laughing – it makes me gag on my mouth-guard. I do have an awful lot of happy though. Roller Derby has contributed to a lot of that.
Favourite Position: Phrasing! I like to go fast, so maybe it’s jamming? I’ll get back to you on this one.
Worst Injury: My hand is in a cast as I write this, because I fell onto my thumb and chipped a big-ass bit of bone away from it. I give this an injury rating of three thumbs up.
My injury rate so far has earned me the name ‘Our little mess’ from one of my team mates (shout out to Sugar Maddy).
Proudest Derby Moment: When I (as a lowly fresh meat) had my first go at being a Jammer, and accidentally got past a wall of four actual players. That, and when I finally worked out how to do a transition in motion without dying.
Started Skating: It all began with Fresh Meat, August 2016 <3
Song To Skate To: Bubblegum Bitch – Marina and The Diamonds, Superlove – Charli XCX, The Door or Coming, Going, Leaving – Karmella’s Game.
Alter Ego: Writer, book devourer, logophile, tea drinker, cat enthusiast, dancefloor tearer, awkward AF cartoon-faced night-dweller, minion to the eyebrow overlords.
