Skater Bio: Picture the scene: a Californian beach setting in summer; girls on roller skates with all the moves, skateboarders doing amazing tricks, a sunset, and an uplifting dance track playing in the background. I wasn’t in that scene unfortunately. I mean…. I WAS, but just in my head, because it was actually a 2011 sports drink advert that didn’t sell me on their product, but those ridiculously cool things the girls were doing were the first thing that ever made me want to put skates on. Shortly after, Sky Sports showed a little article on roller derby and I stood in the middle of my living room watching it with my mouth open, getting excited goosebumps. I knew straight away that despite being unfit, allergic to any form of physical exercise and in my late 30s, I had found: The Thing I Was Meant To Do.
I find roller derby scary; full of physical and mental challenges. But it’s also fun, rewarding and off-the-scale exciting. I had no when I started just how happy roller derby would make me. I love it.
Favourite Position: Definitely blocking, I think I’m a pretty solid unit! Also, I secretly really love jamming but it’s not my strong point right now.
Worst Injury: Whiplash from falling backwards and banging my head (should have bent my knees!). I went to hospital to get checked out and seriously considered Miss Whiplash as my derby name for a while! Plus, two awful ankle injuries (ligament damage) that kept me out for quite some time.
Proudest Derby Moment: The absolute joy of my double-header weekend where I won my first award getting best blocker after captaining a side during a cherry popper at Rainy City. Then the following day I pulled on my first Roller Derby uniform to play for York Minxters against Durham City Rolling Angels, helping us get a fabulous win. I have no idea how I did it, but I did. And I never wanted to take my skates off ever again after it.
Started Skating: 2012 for Hull’s Angels Roller Derby, with a fair bit of time off due to injury. I joined the Minxters in 2017
Songs to Skate to: DJ Fresh – Louder (the soundtrack to the ad that started it all)
Stevie Wonder – Superstition (makes me want to mooooove)
Faith No More – A Small Victory (a fabulous motivator)
Alter Ego: By day, I am a Senior Policy Advisor in the Ministry of Justice, which may sound super-dull but I think that working in public policy is quite a privilege. I work in London a couple of days a week and work at home the remainder of the time meaning I get to hang out with my dog-child: a chocolate Sprocker Spaniel called Hector. I love Jane Austen, Greg Iles, vampires, superheroes, red wine, my monthly Empire magazine, Singstar, York, and my patiently supportive derby widow/husband Mike.
